Utility-based agents

concept · part of AI agent

Utility-based agents optimize actions based on a utility function, aiming not just to reach a goal but to find the best way to do so. Example: a self-driving car calculating the fastest, safest route.

They assign a utility value to each possible action, representing how 'useful' that action is in achieving the desired outcome, and aim to maximize utility rather than simply reaching a goal. Example: an AI used in financial trading maximizes profit by evaluating various actions (buy, sell, hold) based on market conditions.
